Open Call for Art for the Philadelphia International Flower Show
Are you an artist inspired by gardening? Create a proposal for the Philadelphia International Flower Show’s second annual seed pack, Brilliant Cottage Garden. One artist will be selected to have their artwork seen by thousands of people and turned into a limited edition seed pack by the Hudson Valley Seed Library.
Deadline for Submissions: August 20th
Every year the Hudson Valley Seed Library commissions original contemporary art for the covers of their unique heirloom seed packs. Although this year’s general call for art is over, there is one more special opportunity to become a pack artist.
The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society has partnered with the Hudson Valley Seed Library to create custom seed packs to celebrate the 2013 Philadelphia International Flower Show theme, “Brilliant,” focusing on the historic and contemporary landscapes and gardens of Great Britain. These packs and the original work of art will be featured at the Flower Show and will become part of the Seed Library’s Art of the Heirloom traveling exhibition.
Proposals from all kinds of artists will be considered including all two dimensional mediums except photography. Proposals are due August 20th. Please follow all of the guidelines for your submission to be considered. All artists, including previous and current Seed Library Pack Artists, are eligible regardless of age or geographic location. We will be unable to respond to individual questions during the selection process. Artists will be notified the week of August 20th.
Include the following information plus two images of existing work, a sketch and description of your proposal.
Send submission email to Michael@seedlibrary.org.
Info to include in body of email:
Resume (as attachment)
Attach up to two images of existing work. Your previous work does not need to be garden related. Small to medium file size, jpg, png, tiff. Please include medium, dimensions, year created.
Using your unique creative vision, create a proposal interpreting the Flower Show Art Pack variety:

Flowers in the mix:
Single Mix Hollyhock, English Daisy, Forget me not, Shirley Poppy, Johnny Jump Up
Your sketch should show both concept and composition and give a rough estimate of the finished size of the final piece.

Artists will be selected based on the following criteria:
1. Followed all guidelines including deadline.
2. Ability to create final work by due date of August 31th. (Extended to September 8th)
3. Quality, consistency, and originality of current work.
4. Ability to originally represent specific varieties conceptually and/or botanically.
The top three artists will be chosen and contacted and will have the opportunity to refine their proposal using a seed pack template. One artist will be selected by PHS.
Selected artists will have their original work displayed in the Art of the Heirloom exhibition at the Philadelphia International Flower Show as well as selected other venues for the Hudson Valley Seed Library’s Art of the Heirloom exhibition including, but not limited to, the National Heirloom Expo and Horticultural Society of New York. The artist’s name will be printed on the outside of the seed pack and their bio will appear on the inside of the pack. The artist will be featured in a blog post on seedlibrary.org along with link to their website.
