Whether you want to learn more about a word or a plant, you need to get to the roots. This long-lasting variety of collards came from the Vates gene pool. Vates is an acronym for the Virginia Truck Experiment Station. What do greens have to do with trucks? It's all about the roots. A truck farm is not, as you might think, about loading a truck with veggies and driving them to market. The term "truck farm" actually comes from the French word "troque," meaning "exchange." The Vates varieties were all developed for small farms that sold their vegetables at market. We are championing this variety because we think it's a champion in the garden. Throw this collard in the ring with any other variety and it will prove itself a champion. Think of a breeder like a good trainer- one that can recognize the strengths and weaknesses of a potential champion and guide them over time to being the best they can be.
