Detailed Product Info

Ground cherries are an unheralded delight of the garden. Very easy to grow and highly productive, they yield dozens and dozens of small, sweet treats per plant. This variety is especially delicious. The fully-ripened fruit have tones of pineapple and citrus--their golden color instantly appealing. Terrific for munching and for making chutneys. We brought ground cherries with us to the Woodstock Farm Market and the Pickle Festival in NYC. Both times, folks were skeptical about trying them, but once they did, they kept coming back for more--even kids, who can be the most picky about new foods. We had to start keeping track of who had enough tastes and cut them off so that there would some left for everyone else. Many people asked us why they are not more commonly known. Although they have great flavor and are easy to grow, they are not well suited to mechanical harvesting and grocery store shelf life. They are, however, perfect for the grazing gardener.

Growing Instructions

Grow like tomatoes: sow indoors 3-8 weeks before last frost, then transplant after frost. Can be slow to germinate; need heat. Grows rapidly and with much branching once transplanted. Becomes a bushy plant; may require support to keep outer branches aloft. Harvest fruit only after it drops to the ground, when it's ripe and delicious. Immature fruit are not tasty.
