ARTiculture!  Blooms at 2014 Philadelphia Flower Show

Call for Art

Submit a finished, original work of art based on this year's theme for a chance to be seen on seedlibrary.org, at the Philadelphia Flower Show, and featured on the ARTiculture seed pack!

Here at the Hudson Valley Seed Library, we believe that art and artists play an essential role in the enjoyment and culture of gardening. We're excited to be partnering with another organization that celebrates the intersection of the arts and horticulture- the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. Every year, PHS presents the most artistic flower show in the country, the Philadelphia Flower Show.  This year's show theme, ARTiculture, highlights the creative hands that bring gardens to life along with those that bring life to art.

We are looking for artists who would like to have their artwork seen by more than 250,000 people at the Philadelphia Flower Show, March 1 – 9 as part of the Hudson Valley Seed Library's Art of the Heirloom Exhibition. One work of art will be chosen to become the cover of this year's annual Philadelphia Flower Show seed pack, called ARTiculture Blooms!

Guidelines:

Please follow all guidelines carefully. We can ONLY accept unframed, 8x8 works of art. This is for fine art- NO TEXT. You do NOT need to design the pack, just create the art based on the theme and varieties!

Concept: Every year, the Hudson Valley Seed Library creates a limited edition custom seed pack for the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society based on the Philadelphia Flower Show theme. This year's pack will be called ARTiculture Blooms and contains a Primary Prairie seed mix of Red Dazzler Cosmos, Wild Yellow Sunflower, and Blue Cornflower.

Works of art should creatively interpret the show theme and the pack varieties. While the varieties must be represented in some way on the pack, we'll be looking for the most original, engaging, and creative ways that artists use the varieties to interpret the theme of "ARTiculture", the pack name "ARTiculture Blooms", and/or the primary palette concept of the mix- the colors from which all colors can be created.

Winning Entries:

  • All of the entries that follow the guidelines will be shared online with credit given to each artist.
  • The top nine entries will be displayed in the Art of the Heirloom Exhibit in the main exhibit hall at the Philadelphia Flower Show.
  • One work will be chosen to be featured on the cover of this year's seed pack. Two thousand seed packs will be printed and sold at the show. Each pack will include the name of the winning artist and bio about the artist.

Mediums: All 2-D and flat/relief 3-D mediums are accepted excluding photography. This includes but is not limited to painting, collage, paper cutting, carving, plant matter, encaustic.

Dimensions: All works must be 8"x8" square.

Submissions:

You should create an 8"x8" finished work of art in your medium of choice. We cannot accept sketches, mock-ups, or written proposals. Scan an image of your finished work and submit it here:
