Seedy Quote of the Day: Exupery

by Doug Muller

I tend to turn to mush when the right quote comes along. The right words can inspire us to improve, re-energize us when we're worn down, or help us accept our gardens and ourselves the way we are.  As I find quotes that speak to me, I'll be sharing them with you in the hopes that they will help you as well.

I just added this quote to my presentation about seed-saving for homesteaders that I gave at the NOFA-NY Conference last weekend. The whole experience of being at an event where everyone cares about sustainable farming, food justice, and good dirt as much as I do was inspiring. Maybe that's why I got a little choked up when I read this seedy quote out loud.

Our gardens are series of bitter defeats and delicious resurrections. Every seed planted is a life-affirming act of resistance. My hope is that this year, no matter the defeats you may have experienced in last year's garden, you will once again put your faith in seeds, nurture them, watch them awaken and grow. Stink bugs, bean beetles, late frost, hungry deer, and GMO giants be warned, we will garden again!
