Succotash Runner Bean

Certified Organic Seed

Phaseolus vulgaris

Blue-hued dry bean that's great for soup.

A rare variety from the Narragansett Indian tribe of Rhode Island, this uniquely shaped, maroon-colored, dime-sized bean closely resembles a kernel of corn and is well-adapted to the northern coast. It has traditionally been used for succotash, an indigenous northeastern dish of corn and beans. Full runner: provide trellising or other support for highest yields.

Direct sow outdoors as soon as the threat of frost has passed. Sow seeds 1-2" apart. These beans require stakes or other forms of trellising for support and best yields. For best results, allow the beans to dry on the plant. Harvest beans when dry prior to the first fall frost. If weather does not permit this, pull the plants up at the last possible moment and hang to dry, then thresh the plants to remove the beans. Store in a cool, dry dark place.
