Djulis (Pink Quinoa)

Chenopodium formosanum

A plant with tons of personality and practical use.

Closely related to quinoa, and familiar to some as “Taiwanese Quinoa” or “Red Quinoa,” this delicious edible green, grain, and spectacular ornamental is called “Djulis” by the Paiwan people of Southern Taiwan, where this plant has flourished as a staple crop. Planted in full sun, Djulis can grow up to 6’ tall, producing nubby-textured red fronds that resemble Love Lies Bleeding. Djulis can also be harvested as a cut flower to add interest to vase arrangements. As plants mature and grow heavy with seed, the leaves turn a beautiful burnished pink and gold.
This variety is suitable for growing as a microgreen. 🌱

Transplant at 12" spacing after danger of frost, taking care to plant in an easy to remember arrangement, as this plant is similar in appearance to the common agricultural weed Lambsquarters. Keep well weeded and watered when young. Likely will not reach grain maturity within USDA zones lower than 7, but is excellent as a nutritious spinach substitute, and makes a beautiful ornamental.
