Gladiolus 'Byzantine'

Gladiolus communis ssp. byzantinus

An ancient wildflower that adorned early grain fields.

Blooms late spring

Also known as Jacob's Ladder or Sword Lily. A delicate, light magenta-pink relative of modern glads that dates back to 16th century grain fields. Sweetly unassuming, as a wildflower would be, yet very exotic looking with its sword-like leaves and its spike of alternating flower buds. Naturalizes well in appropriate zones and is surprisingly winter-hardy.

Byzantine Gladiolus does best when planted in nutrient-rich, moist, well-drained soil in full sun, yet will tolerate some afternoon shade. Plant bulbs in late fall, at least 4" deep and water in well. Requires consistent moisture throughout the season. Mulch plants in winter to ensure survival, particularly in borderline zones.
