Hirayama Kai Choi

Certified Organic Seed

Brassica juncea

Very spicy, pretty Indian mustard green.

A new, very spicy leafy Indian mustard hailing from Hawaii. This little plant packs a punch, making it quite popular among our mustard loving staff. Fall crops, when properly spaced, will form a tight heart. Originally selected in Hawaii to be resistant to white rust, it's a great choice for warm, wet climates in addition to the cooler spring and fall seasons of the Northeast. Best when grown in temperatures under 90 degrees. Cold hardy, but for end-of-season harvests, sow at least three weeks prior to fall frost.

Direct sow beginning 2-3 weeks before last frost. Can be sown straight through until the end of August, though late spring sowings can bolt early and be taken by flea beatles; consider using row cover. Sow more densely than indicated for baby clippings. Harvest whole head--not really a cut-and-come-again green. Superb in fall and winter.
