Direct sow fava beans outdoors as soon as the soil can be worked. Fava beans are cold hearty and extremely heat intolerant, so do not delay. Late planting will result in reduced or low yield. Sow 1-2 inches deep, 2-4 inches apart. Thin the weakest seedlings out. Fava beans require moist, fertile soil and cool temperatures. In the case of a hot spring, try cooling the plants with overhead watering especially at the flowering stage, otherwise, drip irrigation is best.
Harvest when pods are glossy, plump and browning. You should be able to see the outline of the 1-1.5 inch beans. Once pods are harvested, shell, then peel the tender bean from the tough exterior. Use immediately or freeze.
