Detailed Product Info

Another name for this colorful and tasty type of Swiss Chard is Five Color Silver Beet. Its ruby and golden stems and bold green leaves arch exuberantly toward the sun (when the sun is really bright it seems to penetrate these stems, making them glow). Consider planting in a spot where its ornamental value can be appreciated. It's easy to grow and tends to perform quite well even when slightly neglected.

One of the tastiest ways to prepare chard is to heat some oil over low heat in a tall pan, toss in some sesame seeds until toasted, and then toss in a mess of washed chard until it wilts. Add soy sauce and a little sweetener: so good!

Growing Instructions

Direct sow beginning 2-3 weeks before last frost, or start indoors 3 weeks earlier and transplant. In-row spacing should be eight to ten inches apart (thinning makes great braised greens!). Harvest outer leaves for continual production. One sowing will provide harvestable greens all season, though it's smart to do a mid-summer sowing in case disease pops up. Sowing monthly in succession would provide a steady crop of the most tender, young leaves. Like all plants harvested for their leaves, chard appreciates fertile soil.
