It is native to North America, where it was used by native peoples to treat many ailments, including cough and fever. Its aroma is indeed anise-like; a small handful of its leaves make a great addition to a salad, and when dried they can be used to season baked goods. The flowers are highly attractive to bees, making this plant a true all-around star of the garden.

About the Art and Artist
Artwork by Susan Ryan. "I’ve worked as an artist for over 40 years. I graduated from Art Center College of Design in 1971 and began a career in advertising as a freelance illustrator. My illustrations won many awards and I worked with top agencies in SF, LA, Chicago, NYC and Seattle. Because my illustration style was—as one art director put it—warm and fuzzy I was often used to illustrate advertising copy that was informative but otherwise dull. After many years in advertising, I left that world and moved into Fine Art, creating and exhibiting paintings, paper mache sculpture and artwork made from recycled materials. My oil paintings bear the mark of my training and early experience as an illustrator, telling stories of an everyday world, recreated by me into a world orderliness, vibrant color, warmth and goodness."
