Trying to trace the origins of the modern orange carrot is like looking through a kaleidoscope. Shapes and colors reflect and refract, and the more time you spend looking, the more they change. The carrot's geo-genetic story starts with a white and wild bitter root, touched by the sweet yellow sun of the Middle East, growing under purple mountains and bright vermillion sunsets, its seeds passed by thousands of hands of many hues. This prismatic mix reflects the colorful evolution of the carrot.

Growing instructions

Direct sow from mid-April until early August in loose, fertile, deeply-worked soil. Choose your least-weedy soil for carrots, as they are tricky to cultivate when young; carrots can take 10 days to germinate, and can be quickly choked by weeds. Thin young carrot seedlings to 2" apart, then thin baby carrots by pulling out every other carrot, allowing the remaining carrots to grow to full size. While good carrots can be grown in any soil, they only grow to supermarket size in loose and deep soils without too many rocks. Fall carrots can be stored in plastic bags in the refrigerator or in a root cellar for months. Do not store fresh carrots with the tops on; they draw water and nutrients from the roots. Rather, remove the tops after harvesting and use to flavor soup stock.

I have had fantastic harvests from hudson valley seed’s carrots the past two years. Love it!

I love this variety! I have grown them for a few years. I never thin them out and they still turn out well. It’s always fun pulling them out to see how long they are.

Love this mix. Got all of these out of one of the 7 gallon grow bags. Just scattered some in, barely even thinned them. Will definitely keep growing these!!

Not much to review. I will use these seeds for next years planting. I may plant them late in the season this year with the hope they will grow next year. I like the different colors of carrots. I also plant tender sweet.

first time grower, grew them last year -- like other buyers I also forgot to thin them and I still had some massive carrots (as well as a bunch of cute tiny ones my kids got a kick out of.) they're pretty unfussy, but I was careful to keep them gently covered and moist until they germinated. flavor's pretty good.
