Upstate Oxheart Tomato

Solanum lycopersicum

Certified Organic

Grown on Our Farm

Dense 3-lb. fruits with exceptional flavor.

Who can resist a giant tomato? One quick pluck and voila! a plateful of sweet, soft eating. These oxhearts are the biggest of the big. A local gardener donated this seed to us, and we were instantly smitten. Its fruits are huge, weight up to 3 lbs.; its flavor is exceptional; its texture is dense and multi-layered with heart-like flaps and cavities. And while this variety is a gardener's dream, it's a bit of a seed company nightmare: it produces very few seeds per fruit, which means we have to grow a ton of plants to get enough seeds for our packs! Indeterminate.

In southern nj. Started these in February and got more tomatoes than I knew what to do with come August. I planned a large support structure for these but I wish I planned a bigger one. Delicious tomato.

Massive, worth the extra staking for these monsters. Few seeds. Incredible flavor. 2-3lbs each. Make sure to prune the plant and support the growing tomatoes.
Only negative I’ve found is that they seem to be more prone to blossom end rot under field conditions. Not terribly, just something to watch out for.
Definitely will be growing these again.

I have been saving seeds of this variety for 3

I have been saving seeds of this variety for 3 years now. Last year, I grew seeds I saved from a 1lb 15oz tomato that had only 15 seeds in it. All but 1 seed germinated well so I had plenty of plants to grow and give away. Flavor of the tomatoes is absolutely top notch.

I’ve planted these seeds and they are germinating perfectly. Can’t wait to try this awesome looking tomato.

After trying for two years to grow this variety, I’ve given up. Maybe got 3-4 tomatoes per plant. Waste of time and space in my garden.

We are so sorry to hear that the Upstate Oxheart Tomato did not perform to your liking. Giant fruit like these produce require a lot of energy from the plant which means you tend to get fewer but larger tomatoes. We understand your disappointment.

After spending almost $5.00 for 15 seeds, what I got was an entirely diferent tomato plant that grew clusters of 1-2" flavorless pink tomatoes. I don't have enough space to grow multiples of each variety, and won't risk wasting a spot on the seeds I got. The package is pretty, but not worth the added price.

Thank you for ordering with us and we are so sorry that the Upstate Oxheart seeds you received did not come true to form or flavor. We haven't had any other reports of such issues with the Upstate Oxheart seeds. We passed your photos along to our trials farmer for comparison to ensure our seedstock is still strong. We are glad you have decided to give our Upstate Oxheart seeds another shot

None of the Oxheart seeds germinated. I tried three different times with different soil. Maybe got two or three spouts that quickly died.

Thank you for your review! We have reached out to you directly to help if we can. We test each of our seed varieties twice each year for germination and are happy to share the germination rates for your lot # if you'd like.

Grew them last year. I admit I didn't prune them or pick off the lower leaves but the fruits I did get were huge. Really big!
Slicing one in half, it's all meat! Few seeds. So, I would recommend them just baby them more than I did.

We love oxheart tomatoes 🍅. They are delicious, meaty, and contain a small amount of seeds. BLT sandwiches made with them are awesome!

    Unmatched Flavor!
As I scroll through the website and dream of my next garden, I realized without a doubt I wanted to grow these Oxhearts again. I grew them last year for the first time and they had the best flavor of all the full sized tomatoes in my garden. I had some trouble with chipmunks digging up my young plants, hornworms defoliating some branches, and a wind storm that tipped a lot of them over... but I did get a bunch of these to grow to maturity and though I didn't get that many fruits (I also started my seeds late), the ones I got were AMAZING for fresh eating and sauces. There are few seeds in these massive fruits and the plant puts a ton of energy into growing a few LARGE fruits rather than a bunch of smaller ones. It was worth the wait for them the ripen fully on the vine. I did a tomato tasting with the 6 varieties I grew. My parents and my grandmother all selected this tomato as their favorite. The flavor is sweet, intense, mouthwatering umami in every single bite. One tomato cut up and marinated fed two people with a large helping each. I will be growing these again this year, and starting them a little earlier so I can get more!

    Amazing Tomato Beast!
Adore these tomatoes! This was our first year growing this variety and they have done amazingly well despite our less than ideal growing conditions this year in Saint Louis. Weather has been rather fickle fluctuating between monsoons, drought, & our always present humidity; these poor guys have had a tough go of it - from my seed starting learning curve to being fully dug up by raccoons. Even in less than stellar circumstances these fellows have thrived especially compared to some of the other varieties I started. Consistent yields of 1 - 2 pound fruit which I've used to can some wicked good tomato sauce. Totally in love & highly recommend!
