Intriguing appearance, exceptional flavor.

Black Futsu is an heirloom Japanese pumpkin with attractive, deeply ribbed, bumpy skin that cures from deep black-green to a warm orange buff color. Its skin is thin and edible, and its flesh is top-notch: finely textured and extraordinarily nutty in flavor. It is wonderful roasted, fried in tempura, pureed in pies or soups, or pickled.

We like to imagine this squash as a metaphor of sorts: that no matter how complex and intricate something (or someone!) seems on the outside, it can be made up of sweet and simple truths.

Black Futsu bears 3-5 fruits per plant, averaging 3 lbs. each.

Growing instructions
Direct sow after frost, or start indoors 2-3 weeks earlier. Transplant in hills 6' apart, 3 plants per hill, or in rows 36" apart. Can be trained to grow up a trellis. Harvest when squash are buff-colored with no trace of green. Cure in a warm spot for 2-3 weeks.

Funny story... misplaced the packet . Found this year. Planted three seeds. Bountiful 18 squash.
Lovely color inside. Roasting for some soup.

I think I started my seeds a little late, my plant only produced three squash. Two were still green when frost came, but they ripened indoors just fine. BUT, these were the tastiest squash I have EVER eaten. After roasting in the oven, I almost ate one whole over my sink like an animal. My last squash seems to be just fine so far after being stored inside for the last few months. Will try and grow many more this season!

I like the idea of this squash. Last year it was attacked by vine borers. This year I am smarter and taking many steps to avoid the borers. Hope I am successful because I love the look of the fruit.
