Liatris

Also known as gayfeather, liatris is unusual in that the composite flowers bloom from the top of the stalk to the bottom, unlike most spiking flowers. The gorgeous inflorescences attract pollinators and are particularly important to certain moth species. A perennial, liatris begins blooming in its second year. It overwinters in the form of corms, underground tuber-like stems. Liatris needs cold to germinate.
