Call for Art

Every year, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society creates the most artistic flower show in the country, the Philadelphia Flower Show. For the fourth year in a row, the Hudson Valley Seed Library will be mounting an art exhibition and creating a special commemorative seed pack for the Flower Show.

Please follow all guidelines carefully. We can ONLY accept unframed, 8x8 works of art. This is for fine art- NO TEXT please. You do not need to design the pack, just create the art based on the theme and varieties!

Art Submission Guidelines:

Concept: This year's Hollywood inspired show theme is "Lights, Camera, BLOOM!" The seed pack will be called "Red Carpet" and is a mix of over 12 different varieties of red flowers. (scroll to bottom for full list.)

Works of art should creatively interpret the show theme and the pack varieties. While the varieties must be represented in some way on the pack, we'll be looking for the most original, engaging, and creative ways that artists use the varieties to interpret the theme of "Hollywood", the pack name "Red Carpet", and/or the horticultural beauty of growing a red carpet of flowers.

Winning Entries:

  • All of the entries that follow the guidelines will be shared online with credit given to each artist.
  • The top five entries will be displayed in the Art of the Heirloom Exhibit in the main exhibit hall at the Philadelphia Flower Show.
  • One work will be chosen to be featured on the cover of this year's seed pack. Two thousand seed packs will be printed and sold at the show. Each pack will include the name of the winning artist and bio about the artist.

Mediums: All 2-D and flat/relief 3-D mediums are accepted excluding photography. This includes but is not limited to painting, collage, paper cutting, carving, plant matter, encaustic.

Dimensions: All works must be 8"x8" square.

You should create an 8"x8" finished work of art in your medium of choice. We cannot accept sketches, mock-ups, or written proposals. Scan an image of your finished work and submit it using the form below.

Deadline for online submissions: December 14th. Exhibiting artists and the winning Pack Artist will be notified December 8th. If selected to be shown in the exhibit, art must be mailed to arrive at the Hudson Valley Seed Library, in Accord, New York no later than December 16th. We can't answer comments and emails with questions about the call for art. We have done our best to provide all of the info you need. Please do your best to follow the guidelines. Thank you!
