Beans are fun, fast-growing plants that take little care to perform well.
It makes sense to inoculate beans before sowing, which boosts the nitrogen levels of your garden soil with no work whatsoever. Inoculant is available at garden centers.
Sow bean seeds about three or four inches apart in the row. Lima beans are frost tender and thrive in warm conditions, wait to plant until last frost has passed. Plant in full sun, and provide a sturdy trellis for beans to climb, such as individual stakes, netting, or twine tied from a tall overhang and pinned to the ground. Will grow to 3' tall. Thinning is not necessary, but do keep the plants weeded, especially when young. Will bear for many weeks, continuing to set pods until frost. Use as a shelly bean or as a dry bean for baked beans and soups.
