Wasabina: Wasabi Greens

Certified Organic

Brassica juncea

Toothsome mustard greens with a pungent kick.

From Japan, naturally. Meeting new plants often happens through meeting new people. We got to taste this pungent mustard green, named after the flavor of wasabi, in a field in rural Japan. Its growers are part of the global Shumei community and farm using Natural Agriculture practices. They shared seeds with us, which were then grown by our Shumei farmer-in-residence, Kenny Nakagawa. We are honored to introduce this variety in partnership with Shumei and to bring a taste of Natural Agriculture to your garden.

Shop with confidence: we are now shipping seeds labeled for 2025 planting.
This variety is suitable for growing as a microgreen. 🌱

Direct sow starting 2 weeks before last frost until early fall, or start indoors 3 weeks before transplanting. Spring sowings will bolt early; use row cover to keep off flea beetles, and sow in succession. Fall sowings grow more easily and stay in good shape until serious cold sets in. Leaves provide bursting bites of zesty zing—the right choice for adding punch to any dish.

"In her prints and paintings, Natalie Hinahara marvels at the beauty and wisdom of plants, and wonders what it means to be both a part of and apart from the natural world. Her reduction block print shows the farmer's hands harvesting with a kusakichi saw tooth sickle. She also included the flowers even though the plants are not flowering at the time of harvest, suggesting an earlier planting of greens that went to flower. "
