Blue Vervain - PollinateHV Local Ecotype

Verbena hastata

Certified Organic

Native, mid-height perennial with a sturdy, upright habit.

Blue Vervain is a native plant with a fetching, candelabra-like form crowned by sturdy, elongated cones of lavender blooms that open in succession from base to tip. This locally-collected strain provides excellent all-around pollinator support. Its striking, somewhat architectural, moderate-height form makes it a pleasant and versatile addition to any garden.

Growing to 3-4 feet in height, Blue Vervain blooms in mid-summer in the Hudson Valley, typically late July to early August.

This local ecotype seed is of Hudson Valley wild origin and has been scaled for production on our farm in Accord, NY.

PollinateHV is a collaboration between the Hudson Valley Seed Company and Partners for Climate Action Hudson Valley in support of threatened native pollinators.

We worked with a team of expert botanists, seed collectors, nursery growers and farmers to produce local ecotype native seeds to support at-risk Hudson Valley pollinators. You can find more information about this project at pollinatehv.org/seed-work. Pollinator Partners
Blue vervain welcomes a wide array of native pollinators, including butterflies, moths, bees, and even "flower flies", a critical but overlooked group of pollinators. Its long bloom season makes it a must for any pollinator garden. It's also the host plant for the common buckeye butterfly and several native moths, whose caterpillars can eat only blue vervain leaves.
