Boneset - PollinateHV Local Ecotype Seedling

Eupatorium perfoliatum

Certified Organic

Soft, creamy white sprays of blooms adored by native pollinators.

Boneset is a bold, sturdy plant covered in sprays of creamy white flowers that are highly abundant and very appealing to native pollinators, including the Atlantis Frittilary and the Yellow-banded Bumblebee. It flowers from mid- to late-summer, its flowers forming a delicate coat over the 3- to 6-foot tall upright, arching foliage. Grown en masse, it makes an excellent background or mid-depth plant in borders, serving as a visual screen in wet soils, where it reaches up to 6 feet in height. (In average garden soils, it usually stays in the 3- to 4-foot range). No matter the height, it adds robust shape and form to any garden.

This local ecotype seed is of Hudson Valley wild origin and has been scaled for production on our farm in Accord, NY.

PollinateHV is a collaboration between the Hudson Valley Seed Company and Partners for Climate Action Hudson Valley in support of threatened native pollinators.

We worked with a team of expert botanists, seed collectors, nursery growers and farmers to produce local ecotype native seeds to support at-risk Hudson Valley pollinators. You can find more information about this project at pollinatehv.org/seed-work. Learn more about the Hudson Valley's threatened pollinators and find resources to install pollinator habitat at all scales at pollinatehv.org.

Boneset provides nectar to a variety of butterflies, including the Atlantis Fritillary. This butterfly is historically found in a wide geographic distribution, but its range is shrinking, possibly due to climate change. If you enjoy seeing the Atlantis Fritillary, you'll also want to cultivate a yard full of violets, which are the only food source for its caterpillars!

The Light Yellow-Banded Bumblebee uses boneset as a major nectar source. This bumblebee is native to a wide range of mountainous woodlands from Labrador to Tennessee, but has been declining sharply since about 2003, in part due to habitat loss. It now has a conservation rank of S3 (vulnerable) in New York.
