Hot Portugal Pepper

Capsicum annuum

Long, glistening red peppers.

One of the best hot peppers around. This sweet and spicy pepper is long with thin flesh and ripens quickly in shorter growing seasons. Best when allowed to ripen red on the plant. These peppers are great fresh: sautéed in soups, stews, and added to stir fries for some heat. Dried and crushed, these peppers make some of the best red chile flakes around.
If you happen to grow Jimmy Nardello's Sweet Italian Pepper, please make sure you label your plants well--Hot Portugal is a twin in every way except the hotness!

Transplant once weather has settled, usually 2 weeks after tomatoes have been transplanted (peppers will tolerate earlier transplanting but won't grow much). Plant in full-sun. Peppers do best in well-drained soil, with mulch and weekly watering at the base.
