Jenny Lind Melon
Certified Organic
Cucumis melo
Well-suited to the Northeast.
The Jenny Lind is a small wonder (weighing in at a pound or two), with sweet, juicy succulence protected by ribbed, netted skin.
The seductive, meltingly delicious pink-hued green flesh of this melon deserves every bit of renown as its namesake, Johanna Maria Lind. Ms. Lind, a Swede, caused an unbridled sensation when P.T. Barnum toured her throughout the states in the mid-1800s. Her soprano voice thrilled countless audiences, though some critics found her style a bit cold. This melon can stand a slight chill, too: it is quite happy in cooler summers, providing a taste of sweet and sumptuous indulgence to northern gardens.

Sow indoors under protection 2-3 weeks before last frost, or direct sow after last frost and when soil has warmed significantly. Provide fertile soil and plenty of space. As fruits mature, elevate using flat, porous stones or ceramic shards to avoid rotting fruit. Melons are ripe when they slip from the vine with a gentle tug; color will deepen and fruit will become aromatic.
