New York Early Onion Seedlings
Certified Organic
Allium cepa
A fast-growing onion from New York's Black Dirt Country
Small-to-medium yellow onions with great keeping qualities. Mild flavor makes these great all purpose onions, raw or cooked, especially in the later winter months when other onion varieties has lost their keeping quality. Originally maintained by Orange County, NY black dirt farmers. Our seeds to comes to us from Jay Armour of the Four Winds Farm. While we are used to starting our onion seeds in mid-February and nursing them in the cool greenhouse until our April planting date, Jay's preferred method for sowing onion seeds is to direct sow in the early spring as soon as the soil can be worked. A lot less greenhouse work, but be sure to try this method only if you have a rich soil with high organic matter, to make sure the soil will retain enough moisture that the onion needs for their longer germination period.

Transplant seedlings at 4 inch spacing, or in groups of 3 at 12 inch spacing. Onions require rich, loamy, weed free soil and plenty of water. Weed onion patch often. Pulling large weeds can dislodge onions. Once the tops have started to yellow and flopped over, pull onions and let cure for 1-2 weeks in a warm, dark place. Cut the tops off and store in a cold, dry, dark place until use.
