This week, we rescued a trapped hummingbird and trapped and killed many families of cucumber beetles. We planted many hundreds of plants, but pulled out many thousands more in weeds. Even the most organic farm is a heavily curated environment: an obvious fact I sometimes forget. To be on a farm is not to be in unspoiled nature, yet to farm on a small and sustainable scale is to take a giant action toward protecting natural spaces and resources.
