Dark Star Zucchini
Cucurbita pepo
Certified Organic
Slender, ribbed, uniform zucchini.
What are Dark Stars made of? In this case, Ravens, Black Eels, and Black Beauty. Farmers Bill Reynolds and Donna Ferguson were on the search for open-habit, drought tolerance, and good flavor in their zucchinis. Their search turned into a participatory breeding project with Organic Seed Alliance. By crossing the hybrid Raven with the old-standard Black Beauty zucchinis, they created Black Eel. Years of further improvement led to Dark Star, an exceptional variety that is ready to go supernova!
Dark Star Zucchini was bred for uniformity, drought resistance, and yield. We love the open bush habit of the plants, making fruit easy to spot at the perfect harvest stage. Its slender, dark green look; subtly sweet, tender taste; and prolific nature make it irresistible in nearly every summer meal.

A beautiful, prolific producer. As another reviewer noted, each plant consistently produced an 8-10" fruit daily. If I missed a day of harvesting they would quickly spawn 18-20" monsters! Easy to grow, already looking forward to next season.
I planted a bunch assuming they wouldn't all grow but they did! every time I think the plants couldn't get any bigger they just keep going! I'm absolutely thrilled with how vigorously these guys are growing and have picked a few already but I've got many more on the way! I'll certainly be planting these again (maybe fewer lol)!
Love it. Used to grow black beauty but switched this year. Sticking with this one 100%
I am new to VA gardening, so I was amazed with how prolific Dark Star Zucchini is. I only have one plant, but it keeps growing and provides at least one 8" gorgeous zuke daily. Just the volume I want.
Remaining hopeful, but I started 6 indoors on heat mats and only one sprouted (after 16 days) and then promptly died. The golden zucchini on the other hand, sprouted in 4 days and I have 6 out of 6 healthy transplants ready to go. Direct sowing the Dark Star next week (May 15, in zone 6b) and crossing my fingers.
Thank you so much for ordering our seeds! We are sorry to hear that you are having trouble with the Dark Star. We hope that your direct sowing yielded better results and will be contacting you directly to resolve your issue.
Not sure why, but instead of uniform dark green fruit I’ve gotten one very large, yellow/green zucchini. Better than nothing, just not what I was expecting from Dark Star.
The art is beautiful.
