German Extra Hardy Hardneck Garlic
Allium sativum
Certified Organic
Excellent keeper, store for up to six months.
Also known as German White, German Extra Hardy is in the Porcelain group of hardneck garlics. Bulbs can easily grow to 2" or more in diameter, and with only 4 to 6 cloves per bulb, this is one of the easiest varieties to peel. The taste is pungent, but not overpowering, and the scapes are generous and flavorful.
German Extra Hardy can withstand very cold winters, as well as wet, warm winters, better than many other varieties. Long roots prevent frost heaving. An excellent keeper, German Extra Hardy will store easily for 6 months if handled properly after harvest.

I didn’t closely inspect the product on arrival, though I did unbox it and put it in an appropriate space to wait for planting season, thinking that was sufficient. I recommend you examine each head upon receipt. About half of what I received was old and obviously old before I received it. This means the company knowingly sent out old product.
You, the buyer, are the quality control.
We do our best to send out only the best quality products, however seed garlic are living things and sometimes senesce faster than we expect. We understand the disappointment and frustration when that occurs.
All of our garlic is inspected both when it is packed and as it ships to ensure we are sending quality seed heads. We ask that our customers do the same, and inspect their garlic upon arrival. We ask this of our customers so that we can address any damage or degradation in those cloves within the first 30 days of your possession.
Hardneck Garlic has a storage life much shorter than that of Softneck varieties. When the Garlic is grown locally, such as ours, that means Hardneck Garlic is generally reaching the end of its storage life in Late October. While storage method has a large impact on how your garlic fares, there is no stopping the natural decay that occurs when a living plant is stored past its prime. We recommend that our Hardneck garlic be planted before the end of October, and offer refunds or replacement for any Hardneck garlic that has gone off before October 31st.
With a staff comprised of farmers and avid gardeners we are always happy to offer advice and answer storage and planting questions. We can be reached by phone or email (mail@hudsonvalleyseed.com) Monday thu Friday from 10-4.
I purchased 1lb of the German Hard neck. I harvested 3 cups of scapes, blanched, diced and in the freezer. I have about 42 heads of garlic curing now they sized up real nice. I will definitely be ordering more for this fall.
This garlic reliably greets me every spring when I snowbird home to the Catskills. It stores well and I have it to cook with later season crops of tomato and pepper.
heres’ hoping for another stellar year of garlic! Hiding under the snow anxious for some early Spring sprouting for stir fry flavor.
This year was my second attempt at growing garlic. My first was from a planting in the fall of 2020 from a different vendor. It left a a lot to be desired.
My family & I are so pleased with the results from Hudson Valley's German Hardneck Garlic. I planted in the fall of 2021 & followed your online tips. The flavor is outstanding & I should have planted more.
I grew this in containers. It really needs to be insulated since the year before it froze. But with lots of mulch and wrapping the containers in burlap it did well. I planted about half a pound in three 20 gallon containers in Nov and yielded about 2 pounds by mid July.
I have never tried to grow garlic before so this winter was my first time putting them out in late fall. Here they are making good progress after enduring all winter in the ground under the Agribon cover. Can't wait to taste them in a few months!
The garlic received was beautiful, and in excellent condition when I went to plant it about four weeks after receiving it...thus, cured perfectly. It was also nicely packed in a muslin bag. Once it sprouts, I anticipate more quality! Thanks again.
I put pineapple on my pizza
Having great luck in Central, Wyoming with kale, cabbage, carrots, chard, turnips, arugula. Want to see how garlic does!
Planted the 3 varieties last fall.
2 came up before winter arrived.
The 3rd variety came up in early March.
By mid March all seem to be growing.
Not quite large enough to count all of them but it looks like almost all cloves are growing nicely.
I haven’t received the order yet. It will be shipped late spring
The bulbs were beautiful—-perfect shape and color and ready to plant.
Always provides an excellent harvest with nice size bulbs. The garlic flavor is strong without being over powering. Also overwinters very well.
It’s February, and we’ve had a strange winter here in New Jersey, very little snow and some hard cold snaps, but my garlic are thriving! As with everything I get from Hudson Valley seed it’s a beautiful, quality product. Thank you guys so much for providing plants and seeds I can feel good about.
The company was great with any questions that I had. Great to work with and my items were shipped promptly. Highly recommend.
Actually the cats ruined it all.. we had it on a box ready to plant and they ate some of it and destroyed the rest playing garlic hockey !
Try again next season, I guess
