After WWII, many Ukrainians emigrated to the Hudson Valley and Catskills region, where they soon built churches, summer resorts, and other spaces to share and preserve Ukrainian traditions. A former Ukrainian campground was where our seed company first started growing seed! Thanks to Ukrainian seed savers, this heat-resistant and never-bitter cucumber is still thriving, and a part of the history of this region is still alive. This is a straight, green slicing cucumber with slight ribbing and pale green speckles, which provides nice yields of uniform, 8" fruits.

Growing instructions

Start indoors 3 weeks before last frost and transplant to indicated spacing after threat of frost has passed; or direct sow seeds spaced 4 inches apart as soon after last frost, then thin to indicated spacing once seedlings put on their first true leaves. Plant in moderately fertile soil and water regularly. Can be trellised if space is tight or allowed to grow on the ground. Harvest when cukes are green and white and skin begins to turn smooth, but before they are shiny and yellow. Fruits are tender, sweet, and tasty fresh-slicing cukes at up to 8". Sow again in early summer for fall harvest.

These Ukrainian cucumber seeds blew me away. The whole neighborhood had cucumbers for two months. They were huge and crisp. Going to purchase again for next season.

Wanted to update my last review, these did great this year. Each one came up and did really well. I started them late and bought some potted plants from Lowes. These cucumbers outpaced the purchased cucumber plants and had a much better flavor. Glad I decided to re-try!

I bought this because the description says never bitter. The cucumber was so bitter I couldn’t eat it! Yuck. Hopefully it’s just because of the weather and they’ll get better as the season progresses

Typically we recommend to harvest when the skin of the cucumbers are green and white and skin begins to turn smooth, but before they are shiny and yellow. I also had a female flower and/or pollination problem. Only got one cucumber all season. Was planted near other cucumbers that were very productive. Hmm….

Hi Hudson Seeds, I'm in Central NJ and am growing both the Ukrainian slicing cucumber, and another variety of cucumber. I've got tons of fruit on the other one, but I'm not even seeing what look like female flowers on the Ukrainian cucumber! Is there some environmental condition it's sensitive to? I'd love to get input. I see bee activity on them! Thanks!

Seeds did not germinate. What a total waste of money.

Pick early
We’ve had great luck with these seeds. If we pick them when they’re app 6 inches and still a darker green , they have fantastic flavor.

Bad germination rate or slow to germinate??
I direct planted seeds when the ground was warm….nothing. Everything else germinated.
I tried again since I had quite a few seeds left.. voila! Maybe they like very warm weather???
I won’t buy again unless they have a VERY special taste.

Bad Germination Rate
Maybe it is my packet of seeds but I have tried to start over 10 of these plants with multiple seeds in each cup. Only have had two sprout. The Pickling Cucumbers all came up, as well as all other seeds ordered from Hudson Valley Seed Co, so I don't think it is my planting method... maybe just a bad bunch of seeds.
