Carmine King California Poppy
Eschscholzia californica
Rosy-fuchsia poppies with golden centers.
Like a king bedecked in crimson and gold, these rosy-fuchsia poppies with golden centers dazzle the eye. Meadow or naturalized landscape plantings are especially effective. California poppies are generally drought tolerant and bloom from early summer into fall, but will take a break during heat waves. Honeybees and other bees relish the nutrient-rich pollen. Once established, Carmine King will readily self-sow in place. Pair with Blue Flax for beautiful contrast.

Direct sow; do not transplant. Press seeds into bare, moist soil very early in the chill of spring. Keep soil moist, but not wet, especially when the days begin to warm and the soil is prone to drying out. Poppies can withstand crowding, so only thin if seedlings emerge less than 3" apart. Slow to start, but should take off once plants are 4" high. (Tip: to make broadcasting easier, mix seeds with sand.)
