Flat-Topped Aster - PollinateHV Local Ecotype

Doellingaria umbellata

Certified Organic

Rugged native plants that pollinators depend on.

Flat-Topped Asters are workhorses of our native ecology, eagerly establishing themselves in diverse soil conditions, flowering tenaciously, and supporting pollinators such as Harris's Checkerspot and the Canada Miner Bee. These are wild-looking plants, working well as twinkly fillers at the edges of more cultivated landscapes or as robust replacements for less useful plants in weedy or scrappy areas.

This locally-sourced strain grow to a height of 4-5 feet, with straight upright central stems that spread broadly at the top to support hundreds of diminutive blooms—each with a golden center and thin white petals.

This local ecotype seed is of Hudson Valley wild origin and has been scaled for production on our farm in Accord, NY.

PollinateHV is a collaboration between the Hudson Valley Seed Company and Partners for Climate Action Hudson Valley in support of threatened native pollinators.

We worked with a team of expert botanists, seed collectors, nursery growers and farmers to produce local ecotype native seeds to support at-risk Hudson Valley pollinators. You can find more information about this project at pollinatehv.org/seed-work. Flat-topped aster is the host plant for caterpillars of Harris's Checkerspot, a native butterfly with distinctive orange-and-black markings. This butterfly needs wetland habitat, where flat-topped asters are usually found; the loss of wetlands due to development and invasive species is a major threat to its survival.

Flat-topped aster is the primary source source of pollen and nectar for the Canada Miner Bee, a native solitary bee with a conservation rank of S2 (imperiled) in New York. Like most miner bees, the Canada Miner Bee is a pollen specialist, with its life cycle closely timed to coincide with the blooming of its host plant - so the best place to spot this bee is on a flat-topped aster in bloom!
