Spotted Bee Balm - PollinateHV Local Ecotype
Monarda punctata
Certified Organic
Grown on Our Farm
A drought-tolerant, deer-resistant native with exotic, spotted blooms for tea and pollinators.
Spotted Bee Balm is an "eccentric beauty" of the native garden, offering a dramatic display that is quite unlike its more common cousins. Its complex, tiered blooms are a visual feast, featuring whorls of showy, purple-tinged bracts and tubular flowers distinctively dotted with purple spots. Thriving where others might wilt, this tough native prefers sandy soils and intense sun, exhibiting remarkable drought tolerance compared to other Monardas. While it typically behaves as a biennial, it self-sows readily in happy spots to ensure a returning patch of this stunning, gray-green foliage.
Beyond its unique looks, this plant is a powerhouse for biodiversity. It serves as a critical host for the Raspberry pyrausta butterfly and a nectar hub for the endangered Karner Blue, along with countless bumblebees and honeybees. Gardeners will appreciate that it is virtually deer-proof, yet offers a gift to humans as well: the aromatic, crushed leaves can be brewed into a soothing tea, a remedy historically used by Native Americans to treat colds and fevers.
