Wild Lupine - PollinateHV Local Ecotype

Lupinus perennis

Certified Organic

Grown on Our Farm

A beautiful, blue-spired perennial that fixes nitrogen in sandy soil.

Wild Lupine is a true ecological icon, instantly recognizable by its dense spires of deep blue and purple flowers that grace the landscape in late spring and early summer. Its beautiful, palm-shaped foliage provides a lovely textural contrast to its elegant blooms. This native perennial is famous as the exclusive host plant for the endangered Karner Blue butterfly, and it also supports the Frosted Elfin and Eastern Persius Duskywing. By growing it, you are providing a critical and necessary resource for these rare species.

As a true prairie beauty, Wild Lupine has specific—and strict—soil needs: it requires a significant amount of sand and absolutely will not tolerate heavy clay. Fortunately, its value extends beyond habitat; as a legume, it is a distinctive and showy nitrogen fixer, naturally enriching the soil around it. Once the magnificent blooms fade, the mature seedpods eventually explode, scattering seeds that provide a welcome, late-season feast for songbirds.

This local ecotype seed is of Hudson Valley wild origin and has been scaled for production on our farm in Accord, NY.

PollinateHV is a collaboration between the Hudson Valley Seed Company and Partners for Climate Action Hudson Valley in support of threatened native pollinators.

We worked with a team of expert botanists, seed collectors, nursery growers and farmers to produce local ecotype native seeds to support at-risk Hudson Valley pollinators. You can find more information about this project at pollinatehv.org/seed-work. Growing instructions
Seeds require scarification and cold stratification. To direct sow, first scarify seeds with sandpaper and plant 1/4" deep in late fall for natural overwintering. To start indoors, scarify and then stratify for one week by alternating seeds daily between the refrigerator and freezer. Sow 1/4" deep, keep warm (70°F), and transplant out at 1' spacing when seedlings are 2" tall.
