Evergreen Scallion
Allium fistulosum
Conventionally Grown
A scallion patch is easy to grow and useful nearly all year round.
A patch of this scallion is a long-time garden friend. In mid-winter, scallions are happy to get a jump start indoors; they can be transplanted anytime the ground can be worked; they multiply by division naturally if left unharvested; and they overwinter with no special care, emerging powerfully after the ground thaws, their deep green spears a reassuring sign of spring. Not actually a young bunching onion but a member of a separate, non-bulbing species, Evergreen Scallion is versatile, easy-to-grow, and delicious. Chopped and sprinkled on nearly any prepared dish, they make all flavors pop. In short: starting a scallion bed (or container garden) is a journey worth taking.

I love these scallions! I’ve planted them for years in my home garden, and only once have I been able to resist the temptation to harvest and leave some in the ground to overwinter. I use them in my kimchi, and to add flavor or garnish to many dishes. The seeds do lose germ quickly, as all alliums, but it’s easy enough to sow several times through the growing season.
Perfect addition to my garden this year.

Direct seeded multiple times and not a single seed germinated.
Thank you so much for being a customer of Hudson Valley Seed Co. We are sorry to hear about this issue. Scallions are difficult plants to grow and are needed to be started very early indoors. They are cool temperature germinators. We are going to reach out to you directly to help remedy this!
