Honeynut Squash
Cucurbita moschata
Certified Organic
Delicious and convenient single-meal-sized keepers.
Squashes were once too large, too bitter, and too seedy for humans to stomach. But mastodons had different tastes, giant molars, and bigger guts. Their stature also had a huge impact on the soil, creating disturbances that were ideal squash habitat. After the megafauna faded, it was humans who created a niche in their gardens in which squash could survive.
This delightful mini butternut was bred at Cornell University. It's a butternut for the smaller garden and the modest appetite. These little plants produce miniature butternut squashes, much more squat than the standard, but with excellent flavor and texture. A treat for those who thought they couldn't fit a winter squash into their gardens.

Absolutely amazing! Bought from other online nurseries and this one surpassed all the other seed companies. 19 honeynut squashes in total. Bigger than the palm of my hand.
These squash are perfect! Better tasting than a regular butternut squash, and the perfect size for my smaller Chicago backyard. I only grew one plant and got around 10 squash, I probably could have gotten more but I had to start cutting back the plant since I have limited growing room in my yard. My feral kitties also loved to nap in the nice shade the plant provided
4 robust Honeynut Squash plants will provide a winter's worth of squash happiness if my makeshift fencing keeps the local deer from trampling the garden. Fingers crossed!
Not as many Honeynut but it is our first time growing these. They are yummy so will grow again next year.
I prefer these to even the reliable old standard, Waltham butternut...flesh is a more vibrant color, taste is superior, and they perform beautifully: productive, reliable, and haven't been prone to the wilt that sometimes attacks my other winter squash plants. The smaller size is great for my now-smaller household, too. What's not to love?
From four vines planted between my corn rows, I harvested 38 squash. One vine took off along the fence and kept producing through October. I've never grown such productive honeynut squash vines!
I grew these vertically on a wire fence so they took up less room. They were very productive and delicious! They are not great keepers, at least for me, so I cooked and froze all that I wouldn't use up in a short period of time.
