Mizuna

Brassica rapa

Certified Organic

Microgreens Suitable

A cold-tolerant, slow-bolting Japanese green for repeated harvests as salad leaves, stir-fries, or quick pickles.

A traditional green from the mountainous Kyoto region of Japan, prized for its cold tolerance, Mizuna is highly versatile, performing equally well as a salad green (it can easily make up to 50% of a salad before becoming overpowering) and as a standout in cooked dishes, where its stems shine in stir-fries or quick pickles.
Slow to bolt and tender through repeat cuts, harvest leaves as micro, baby, or mature greens. It is fast-growing and relatively untroubled by pests, as long as it is sown after the flea beetle feasts of late spring. (For early Mizuna, consider using some row cover.)

Growing instructions
Mizuna is usually ready for harvest in about six weeks from sowing. Sow under protection 4-6 weeks before last frost; transplant 3 weeks before last frost. Sow successively. Fall crops are most successful: sow July-August. Spring-sown crops must be harvested young to beat bolting; they also may need row cover to protect against flea beetle damage. All Asian mustards will overwinter with protection and give delicious greens through January, at least.
