A Japanese heirloom cucumber with uniform dark green fruits, tender skin, sweet flavor, and vigorous vines for trellising.

Tokiwa, also known as Tokyo Green Cucumber, is a warm-season annual heirloom valued for uniform, dark green slicing fruits with tender skin, few seeds, and a sweet, refreshing flavor. The long, slender cucumbers are best picked at about 1.5 inches in diameter and before they reach 10 inches long. While the fruits may carry some spines, they keep their pleasing texture and flavor even at a larger size. Frequent harvests help sustain production, and the long vines benefit from trellising. Tokiwa is unlikely to turn bitter, even in high temperatures, and is well suited to slicing or making pickles.

Originally from China, Tokiwa became widely popular in Tokyo during the 1930s. This variety is part of our Shumei Natural Agriculture Collection. Its seed was shared by growers in the global Shumei community, who use Natural Agriculture practices, and grown by our Shumei farmer-in-residence, Kenny Nakagawa.

Growing instructions
Start indoors 3 weeks before last frost and transplant to indicated spacing after threat of frost has passed; or direct sow seeds spaced 4 inches apart as soon after last frost, then thin to indicated spacing once seedlings put on their first true leaves. Plant in moderately fertile soil and water regularly. Can be trellised if space is tight or allowed to grow on the ground. Harvest when cukes are green and white and skin begins to turn smooth, but before they are shiny and yellow. Fruits are tender, sweet, and tasty fresh-slicing cukes at up to 8". Sow again in early summer for fall harvest.

    These were really easy to start from seed on my kitchen windowsill and now they're going crazy in the garden. I have them growing on a trellis and they're very happy. The first harvest was super tasty and not bitter at all. Love em.
