The Northeaster known as the Great Blizzard of 1888 traveled up the East Coast and dropped over 40 inches of snow in New York. About 2000 years earlier, a whirlwind of bean diversity made its way up from much farther south, South America. One bean cluster, a cell of vining, flat-podded types, blew all the way into Italy, later returning to New York with immigrants. Northeaster, a tender, succulent Romano type pole bean, came out of this gene pool, its meltingly soft texture as inviting as a fresh bank of snow. Early to mature, Northeaster will produce heaps of delectable pods. If you're a seed saver, let the pods dry on the vines and they will precipitate mounds of white beans that don't require gloves and a shovel.

Growing instructions

Direct sow outdoors after threat of frost has passed. Plant in full sun, and provide a sturdy trellis for beans to climb, such as individual stakes, netting, or twine tied from a tall overhang and pinned to the ground. Will grow to 8' tall. Harvest when pods are about 8" long, 1" wide, and flat. Also makes a tasty shelling bean.

We love these. Especially when cooked in the Italian style—long simmered. They are “meaty” and delicious. It took a while for the plants to get going but they have continued to produce bountifully. Even when they would hide and grow very large, they would still be tender if cooked down. However some, when too large, would develop a tough string. Although these aren’t stringing beans so that is a little problematic.

I’ve grown this bean for several seasons and it is wonderful. Even when large, it maintains its tenderness, is never stringy, and is a good meaty Romano type. Germination rate has always been excellent. For reference, I'm a zone 8 gardener.

Northeaster pole bean is one of my absolute favorite pole snap beans that I discovered when I purchased this art pack. It is now on my must-grow list for each year. It is super fast to set pods. Harvesting is best when the pods are on the smaller side but the larger pods take a while to get tough. Make sure that you have a strong trellis.

Poor germination
Only 50% of my seed germinated, but the beans were amazing!
