Gladiolus corms should be planted in well-drained, fertile soil once all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed to at least 55 degrees F. Tall varieties benefit from supports; the best time to add these is at the time of planting. Provide moderate water throughout the season and deadhead regularly.
In zones 7 and colder, to retain your corms for future years, dig up the corms after the first fall frost. Shake off all loose soil, trim back the foliage to 2" above the corm, and allow the corms to cure for a couple of days in a warm, well-ventilated area before storing them overwinter in paper bags at 40 to 45 degrees F in a dark, low humidity spot. Any shriveled, "mother" corms (found on the base of fresh, new corms) can be removed and discarded. The small cormlet offsets that form on the sides of the corm can also be saved separately - if re-planted these will grow to size and bloom in 2-3 years.
