The Roughwood Seed Collection acquired this rare Creole tomato from French tomato connoisseur Norbert Parreira. The brilliant, vermillion-red fruit resemble a miniature two-inch diameter apple, hence it's other name Manzana de Hispanola (Apple of Hispanola). Depicted in the 1561 Swiss herbal of Konrad Gessner, this is one of the oldest documented varieties in the Roughwood Collection. Best suited for sauces. Indeterminate.

Growing instructions
Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost, then transplant outdoors to indicated spacing after all threat of frost has passed. All tomatoes benefit from staking; indeterminate varieties require it. Prune tomatoes when they reach about 24" high and are starting to produce small suckers. Keep plants from coming into contact with the soil, and water at the roots as often as possible to prevent the spread of soil borne disease. When fruit begin to become fully ripe, harvest every couple of days for the highest quality fruit. At the end of the season, harvest any fruits that have begun to take on color to ripen indoors.

    I grow 30 plus varieties of Heirloom tomatoes from seed every year. This is one of my most favorites. One plant produces an enormous number of tomatoes all season. You can pick a collander every day. It is so delicious. I compare it to wine. I make a "single varietal" tomato sauce from it. Most other tomato sauces I mix and blend a variety of tomatoes. No need to even add herbs (but you can) and I freeze it in tupperware containers. I defrost containers all winter and up until the next year's harvest. It is so flavorful added to any dish I make. It is a medium size salad tomato. If I only grew one tomato, this would be it. My other 2 faves are Pineapple and Mamie's Brown Pink, which are very large tomatoes. Plaite de Haiti is a very large plant in the garden, so give it plenty of room, and a very large and tall tomato cage to keep it under control. Easy to grow from seed.

    Wow
    First time growing from seed and followed the instructions given to me by the seller at the garden show and wow these are very prolific producers. They are the best producing tomato plants in my garden versus the transplants i bought. I will be buying these seeds again for next year. You really have to start them 4-6 weeks before the frost date inside and then get them acclimated to the outdoor weather.
