Winter Rye Cover Crop Seed

Applied as directed. Rye came up quickly. Great cover crop. First time planting.

Excellent seed! I planted this three weeks prior to the photo as a cover crop for my organic garden. I will definitely order again next year.

Very sturdy and vigorous cover crop! Seems to grow anywhere, from my observation so far - this photo shows it growing in extremely poor conditions, an area that's been lawn for decades, with dry, rocky, compacted soil where even the grass was unhappy. As an experiment to start gradually improving the soil in that area, last fall (October, zone 6a) we planted the rye in small shallow holes among the existing grass. Didn't know if it would survive such poor soil and competition with the grass; it didn't grow much in the fall, but grew back surprisingly well this spring. I wouldn't say it's "thriving" but I'm still impressed given the conditions and it's definitely doing it's job of improving the soil! The photo is from mid-May, I wanted to show what it looks like even in bad conditions. In other areas of our property where the soil is richer and moister (but still not great), the rye is absolutely thriving and is much taller and more lush than this.

We planted this very thinly to be a cover crop in our large garden and also for the alpacas to eat early in the spring before other things green up. I planted some in October and it did great. I planted some in November and it went dormant until the spring when it also took off. The alpacas love it, and it protected our sloped soil.

I planted it, limed it, and covered it. About 3 days later the herd of 15 wild turkeys from in the woods behind my house decided to have lunch in my garden. I noticed the birds burping and smiling, so I imagine they appreciated my selection for their menu. Oh well, better luck next year.

Ordered a half pound of the winter rye to use as a cover crop for our raised bed this winter. We are in zone 7a so waited until the first week of October to sow. Started in a 4' x 4' section of the bed and scattered about a quarter of the packet across the surface and used the hard rack to sow about one inch deep. Watered in and amazingly saw sprouts only four days after planting! Have watered only once more (plus one day of light rain) and the sprouts are looking great after two weeks - about five inches tall now. Planning to till into the soil two weeks before planting vegetable seeds next spring.
