Gift Zinnia

Zinnia elegans

Certified Organic

Grown on Our Farm

These striking red blooms make perfect presents.

In its native Mexico, the original zinnia was considered an unattractive weed called "mal de ojos." In the mid-1700s, the German Ambassador to Mexico sent seeds to Johan Gottfried Zinn, a professor of botany who provided the first detailed description of the flower--as well as the first comprehensive anatomy of the human eye. A part of the eye is named after him (the zonule of Zinn), and the botanist Carolus Linnaeus posthumously named the zinnia in his honor.

The cut flowers of this variety, Gift Zinnia, are spectacular on their own: a mix of single and double medium blooms. Plants are medium in height, reaching up to 48" by the end of the season.

Growing instructions
Direct sow after last frost. Or, sow indoors 4-6 weeks earlier, then transplant into average garden soil in a mostly sunny location. Too much fertility may result in more foliage and fewer blooms. Gift Zinnia is a robust plant, growing to 36-48" tall. Pinch off spent flower heads for continued blooming until frost, or let some go to seed to save for next season.

About the artist
Artwork by Nancy Blum. Using ink, gouache, colored pencil, and attention to detail, Nancy creates drawings that blend art and science to explore patterns and the architecture of nature. Here, she shows how pollen-collecting bees follow the bloom's circular topography.

Started this Gift Zinnia indoors. It now has 24 blooms!!

Unlike zinnias in the past, I haven’t had to cut off spent blooms to make it bushy (I’ve only cut 2 since it started blooming) - it’s now 3’ wide!
(My fellow gardening friends are stunned, too. I think starting it indoors and planting my zinnias ~3 feet apart played a big part.)

    Truly a gift! Thanks, HVS!

These zinnias are absolute show-stoppers. EVERYTHING that feeds on flowers loves to feast on these! I get all sorts of butterflies, especially monarchs, plus birds, bees, and more. These are extremely popular with the neighbors and passers-by. I will plant these year after year because of how popular they are with every living thing around me. They germinate super well and bloom continuously.

    success at last!
I bought a packet of these seeds at the Philadelphia Flower Show. I have struggled to grow zinnias in the past, but this time they are thriving in the front of our house. I have enough for cut flowers, and more for all the walkers on our street to enjoy. Thanks for such a fine product!
