Dutch Red Shallot

Though in the same species as onions planted from seed, Dutch Red Shallots lie somewhere in between onions and garlic in terms of flavor. Unlike French Grey Shallots, Dutch Red can be planted in the fall or early spring. They are storage champs and will typically last for a year or more.

Grown Organically at Hudson Valley Seed Co's Four Fold Farm in Accord, New York and at Keene Farm.
A pound of this variety will give you 40-50 plantable cloves of shallots, enough to plant a 25-foot row or 10 feet of a 3-foot-wide garden bed. They will yield 5 to 8 times what was originally planted.

I purchased these shallots and planted in a raised bed in the fall in a zone 5 area. They survived the winter and did very well. I now have a lifetime supply to replant for next year as well as enjoy eating.
Planted in northern CT (zone 6b) on Nov 9 last year. Harvested on Jul 27. A great crop! Nice size bulbs and plenty to store and share with friends! Have already purchased more for next year, can't wait to plant them again!
I have grown both the Dutch Red Shallots and the French Grey Shallots. Back in 2021, I grew the Dutch Red Shallots in two 25 gallon containers and found they were very productive! In Fall of 2024, I decided to grow both the Dutch Red Shallots and the French Grey types. I found the Dutch Red to be more productive and the French Grey did have good flavor, but not that different from Dutch Red and they're more of a pain to peel. This year, I'm going back to all Dutch Red-for the productivity, flavor and storage (they can keep for about a year if properly cured!).
First time growing shallots, but I will be doing it again next year. They grew so well! Photo shows shallots curing on my back porch. Out of half a pound, I estimate that I got about 200 shallots, plenty for family and friends. These are Dutch Red shallots. Planted March 29. We live in zone 5 , northern PA. Ready to order for next year!
Planted in late October, and harvested mid June after getting all floppy. I definitely crowded them so they did turn out smaller but overall 167 total usable plants ready to cure!
Seeds planted in November. I covered them with mulch for the winter. Uncovered the first of March. Plants are doing very well.

Planted October 8, the shallots are above the soil and on November 5, looking good despite several nights of mid-20s temperatures. Next, a thick straw mulch to protect them through the winter.

Garlic grew wonderfully. Did the same planting for shallots. They were small at harvest .
Failed to thrive. Harvested them at the same size as planted. Never had this problem before.
Great success! I bought and planted these in the Spring of ‘25 and got a great harvest, saving 12-16 to replant in the Fall of ‘25. Those did even better (in a different bed)! The taste is great and they store well. They are well cured now, and ready for storage & seeding again in late October. (Zone 5b/6a).
They were a little small, but it was the first time I grew them, so would try again.
don't let the start rating fool you the red shallots where good when I first received them, they were healthy ,, just for some reason they did not grow well for me and I build up the soil weeks before I planted them, ,, I only got 4 shallots out of the bunch.

Fast shipping but a few arrived rotted so if you’re looking for exactly 1 pound to plant, you should consider ordering more than you need. Luckily, I ordered some from another vendor as well so it worked in my favor this year.

I got my Shallotts planted on columbus day. Now on November 3 they have all started . Should have a good start for spring.

First time ordering, received Dutch red shallots ready for fall sowing. They were packaged nicely and the shallots looked even better.
Bought these for late fall planting, Bulbs arrived in great condition. One half pound yields about 50 bulbs which will be enough. Time will tell but expect a good yield next year.
Grew up in the Hudson Valley which influenced my purchase. The quality of the shallots and garlic I receivedhas been very good.
The shallots are beautiful; large and solid, most with secondary bulbs.
