All that's left of the Bishop of Llandaff's Palace in Wales is an iron-gated arch entrance flanked by crumbling stone towers. But his gardens live on in the progeny of his dahlias. Though dahlias are most often grown from tubers, seed-grown dahlias are more fun. Why? Because dahlias are octoploids, meaning they have four times as many chromosomes as most other flowers, so the seeds produce a spectacular diversity of architectural leaves and blooms in a myriad of forms and colors. Part of the joy in planting the Bishop's Children is that if you find one you love, you simply harvest and store the tubers to plant next year. Congrats: you are a plant breeder!
Bishop's Children blooms in mix of red, burgundy, magenta and the occasional yellow flower on foliage that ranges from purple tinged to deep burgundy.

Took about a week to germinate! So far so good!
The second year with my Bishops Children dahlias. I dugs them up last fall to find the seeds I’d planted grew large tubers. I store them in the basement they developed eyes. They’ve grown taller and more beautiful this year.
Had great germination and it was exciting to see what the bloom colors would be! Love the dark foliage
I purchased these at the end of the year sale on 5/22. On 5/28 I planted thinking they would take a long time based upon other reviews, but on 6/1 the little seedlings popped out of the ground bursting with life.
My first time growing dahlias. These were the winners. Better flower production than the shorter version sold on this site. Better production than the tubers I bought at the same time.

A children’s garden 🪴 favorite!
Started these indoors in early April (last frost is typically 5/15 in my 6a MA zone). I had 100% germination! Eventually transferred to 4” pots & they grew so robustly! I moved them into the ground & I ended up with too many (since 100% germination) so I was able to gift many to flower growing friends! Many people don’t realize you can grow dahlias from seed so it’s fun to surprise them! Keep in mind that these are approx 3 feet tall plants with blooms that are anywhere from 1-1/2” to 3”. Blooms will be “open centered” in mostly shades of red, salmon, yellowy-orange with dark strong stems. Fun for bouquets! Be sure to deadhead so you can continue the blooms straight through to frost! After the season, you can dig them up & you’ll find tubers! Just like typical dahlias! A very fun way to introduce yourself or someone you know to dahlias.
I grew these last season and the few that survived the groundhog plague of 2023 were absolutely gorgeous! My favorite was a deep cranberry color and in direct sun it looked like velvet. I started some more from seed yesterday along with the Dandy Collarettes and are looking forward to the summer blooms!

I found a seed packet on my desk from 2017, I just planted it now in 2022 and after just a few days many little seedlings are emerging already - very pleased and even surprised!
Zero Germination Rate
My package of Bishop's Children Dahlia Seeds came with a mix of other seeds - including a calendula seed. Thought that was odd but continued sowing as usual. After 20 days I am confident there is a 0 germination rate, not a single sprout.
Alternatively, I planted a Colarette pack of Dahlia seeds and have about 80% germination - same conditions.
Very disappointed as these were the whole reason I placed the order in the first place and there is no refund policy.

No germination
Like other reviewers, none of my seeds germinated. These were the only seeds I started this season with such poor results.

Good germination, growing nicely
I was surprised to read the other reviews about poor germination. I started my seeds on 4/8 in the 72 cell trays on a homemade seedling rack with heat mat and grow lights. I've had rally good germination and the seedlings are already 4" tall . Out of the 36 seeds I started only 6 didn't germinate. The seedlings look really hearty and healthy, I wish I could post a picture here. I'm excited to see the flowers they produce and am looking forward to saving seeds and tubers for next season!
Good germination?
Just wanted to note that I've had excellent germination from the pack I ordered in the fall. First time dahlia grower, and I overseeded because I'd heard that dahlias are difficult to grow from seed. I used a heat mat and have too many dahlias now. Maybe the germination issues are with a particular seed lot?
