Double Red Sweet Corn

Zea mays

Certified Organic

Extra nutritious sweet corn, dunked in the deepest maroon.

Without a doubt, Double Red is one of the most beautiful corns we've ever seen, with deep red kernels, husk, foliage, cob, and silk. The dark kernels are naturally high in anthocyanins, antioxidants linked to dark red, purple, and blue pigments. They are delicious fresh (steamed or boiled as you would any other sweet corn), but they can also be dried for cornmeal and flour, as the kernels dent in a manner somewhere between that of a flour corn and a sweet corn.

The spectacularly red tone of this sweet corn was achieved by the brilliant Dr. Alan Kapuler (aka Mushroom) of Peace Seeds, who developed new varieties on his small organic farm for decades. His work with this corn, of course, builds on centuries of selection done by indigenous people of the Americas. Our gardens are continuations not just of plant genetics, but of history. Step into this legacy with gratitude, care, and reverence: you are, through your garden, carrying on the work of countless ancestors.

Expect 1-2 ears per plant.

Growing instructions
Direct sow outdoors after the threat of frost has passed, until mid-summer. Sow corn seeds directly 3-4" apart, in rows spaced 36" apart in blocks of at least 4 rows to insure proper pollination for kernel formation. Thin plants to indicated spacing if necessary. Corn requires fertile soil and little attention. Water during dry periods. Harvest when ears are full and kernels are swollen and milky. Take care not to let ears over-ripen.

    Beautiful corn

I LOVE growing this corn! It’s so beautiful! The taste is not quite the same as American sweet corn that people are used to but it reminds of the starchier but still sweet hard boiled corn I grew up eating in Asia.

Do not buy this. Please go on Reddit and read the reviews about this variety. It is the most starchiest and pasty sweet corn I have ever eaten. In fact many of the kernels look like they were crossed with some sort of popcorn DNA. I also had multiple non-red corn that sprouted. I love Hudson but this is kind of not cool. I spent so many months and resources growing these only to have numerous rows of corn that I can't eat.

Thank you so much for your feedback. While there is some natural color variation and kernel shape variation, this appears to be crosspollination. Corn displays crossing in their first generation. Corn requires 2 miles of isolation or staggered timing for pollination to ensure that it does not accidentally cross. We'd be happy to get you some new seed to try again if you have an interest. We will reach out via email

My son bought these seeds and I planted them earlier this spring. If the beautiful red corn silk is any indication, these are going to be gorgeous. Great germination rate and they’re already huge.

I have no idea who bred these but these are not sweet corn. They're closer to cornmeal corn. It was like biting into a dehydrated potato.

Double Red Sweet Corn was bred by the esteemed breeder Dr. Alan Kapuler. It does straddle the line between sweet corn and dent corn, making harvest time very important to getting those fresh sweet kernels before they get starchy. We are so sorry that yours left you with a bad taste in your mouth.

It germinated well and is currently growing.

It's my second time trying to grow this corn, and it's a real disappointment. Each stalk only gets about 4 ft tall, if they can stand up straight at all. I get one or zero cobs per stalk.
If the corn sets any cobs, they are beautiful. But, the lack of cobs and the poor growth rate just isn't worth it.

Thank you for your review and we're sorry to hear that you had trouble! We have contacted you directly to see if we can help.
