Emerite Pole Bean
Phaseolus vulgaris
Certified Organic
Classic filet pole bean with excellent flavor and texture.
In the era of the now collectible French torchons, or cloth tea towels, Vilmorin-Andrieux was breeding culinary French Filet beans for the palates of the court of King Louis XV. Though Americans are most familiar with mid-sized green beans, the thinner French filet beans make for much better eating. Slower to turn bulgy and stringy than American-style green beans, Emerite, a pole French filet bean, these slender pole beans stay tender even when picked a bit late. Cooking is quick don't overdo it! and the result is a pile of slender, tender vegetable that is pure ambrosia for the green bean lover's soul. If you've never grown pole beans, the ease of harvest and the long season of the vines will leave you amazed at how easy green beans can be.
Be sure to provide a trellis while plants are still very young; pole beans yield generously as long as they are allowed to grow vertically.

This is my fourth year growing these particular beans. They are amazing producers. (And delicious) If I keep pruning the dying leaves, I can pick right up to the frost. I plant in May and start picking the big crop in mid July. The yield is smaller in late August through late September but, every couple of days, there are enough for dinner from just a couple of plants. The video is from October 12 near Albany, NY. Cold wind and September sky and my plucky Emerite Bean plants still blossoming!
Super impressed! After a week out of town I skeptically steam very mature pods the size of my index finger and they were still tender — totally shocked!! Not just a couple, but thick pods enough for four servings — none were tough at all. Definitely a keeper. Not the most prolific pole bean Ive grown but the ability to eat ALL of the pods more than makes up for the need for more plants each year. My new fave pole bean ♥️♥️
I buy this pole bean every year and have gotten great crops.

Extremely happy with these beans! Delicious, tender, stringless - not even tough when I missed picking and ended up with a few way oversized ones. Highly prolific - planting one full package gave our family of 4 more than enough to eat beans once per week. Had so many that even though I do not like frozen beans I had to freeze one day's particularly heavy harvest. I waited till first week of June to plant, and we had beans before mid-July. They slowed a bit in mid-August due to the heat (never completely stopped producing) and I assumed we were done with our beans (which would be expected). However the plants began to flower again in the first few days of September and I now have fresh beans to pick again, not as many as our first crop but definitely enough for our dinner vegetable. Will absolutely buy again.
The BEST string beans!
This is my 1st review & I've been a HVS lover for years. These beans are that fantastic, that I just had to share my enthusiasm!
Perhaps most important, they are delicious - long, thin, crisp, full of flavor, & never mealy or woody even when they get a little 'too big'. They are easy to grow (as most beans are), but you do need a good, tall trellis to get the best results. And, they keep giving & giving for months; every time I think they have tapped out, more flowers appear! (Bonus: they are beautiful purple-blue flowers.)
