An in-depth study of the color blue through raw indigo leaf cold process led by textile practitioner Oluwakemi "Kemi" Oritsejafor. Over the course of the session, you will learn to process fresh, raw indigo into dye with direct leaf contact while learning about its Yoruba cultural roots, and its long history as a tool of remembrance and connection.
You will learn fold and tie resist methods to further explore how patterns provide a means of storytelling in traditional Nigerian and West African indigo textiles and printmaking.
Please come with 1-2 small to medium sized, 100% cotton, hemp, or twill personal items. Ahead of class time we ask you to please prep and scour your fabric.
1. Fill a pot of warm water, enough to cover your fabrics
2. Add a squeeze of neutral soap, your standard dish soap or dawn is enough. If you have soda ash available, you can add 1/2-1 tablespoon as well.
3. Submerge your fabric and let it simmer on a low boil for one to two hours. Stir occasionally.
4. Let the water cool down completely and rinse til the water runs clear.
This class is rain or shine, appropriate for ages 13 and up.
