Lemon Gem Marigold
Tagetes tenuifolia
Conventionally Grown
A lacy, low-growing marigold with edible, lemon-scented flowers.
This is a marigold of a different kind. Forget the large, heavy-headed types; 'Lemon Gem' is a signet marigold, cherished for its delicate, finely-divided lacy foliage. The compact plants form neat, low-growing mounds that become absolutely covered in hundreds of petite, single, lemon-yellow flowers. The effect is a cloud of color that carries a bright, citrusy fragrance. It's a perfect, long-blooming choice for the front of a border, in containers, or even planted in a dense row to create a cheerful annual hedge.
This little plant is more than just a pretty face. Its abundant flowers are a magnet for beneficial insects, including hoverflies, making it a wonderful garden helper. In the kitchen, both the lacy leaves and the flowers are a flavorful treat. The petals have a spicy, floral, and slightly citrusy taste that brightens salads, desserts, or even rice and egg dishes. Just be sure to use only the petals, as the base of the flower can be quite bitter.
