Natural Dye Class with Susanna Taylor - 9/12 - 1:30PM

In this class we will create a rainbow of vibrant color using dyes that come straight from the earth. We will create dye pots using flowers, leaves, roots, tree bark, and seeds. You will have the opportunity to learn some tie-dye techniques and a “bundle dye” technique which imprints flower petals and leaves directly onto fabric. We will go over how to mordant something, which is the technique used to prepare fabric so it takes up the dye in a saturated and permanent way. We will dye some fabric pieces, and you may bring a piece of your own clothing or cloth to dye as well (must be silk, wool, cotton, hemp, linen or any other natural fiber. Anything polyester won’t work.) Silk takes natural color best, but all other natural fibers work too. You will take home multiple one of a kind naturally dyed pieces and new knowledge about how to continue this practice at home.

About your teacher: 

Susanna grew up in Vermont and moved to New York City to attend Parsons for Fashion Design after completing her undergrad in Environmental Studies. She lived in NYC for 11 years and now resides in New York’s beautiful Hudson Valley. Over the last 20 years of exploring the intersection of fashion and nature, Susanna has lived in the Amazon jungle and studied how colors are made with local plants, studied natural color in Oaxaca, Mexico with indigenous rug weavers, studied fashion design in Paris, worked as a stylist, designer, seamstress, tailor, interior designer and showroom manager in NYC and SF.

She brings her many years of expertise and her love of color, design, and most importantly, the natural world, together to create her brand Flower Dye. 

Flower Dye’s mission is to connect people with the earth through beauty and color. Through Flower Dye and teaching classes, Susanna wishes to propel the sustainable fashion conversation beyond consumerism into the realm of experience, spiritual alignment with the earth, and questioning how our existence on earth is impacted by our actions and purchases.
