Abundant Bloomsdale Spinach

Spinacia oleracea

Certified Organic

Microgreens Suitable

Boasts cold tolerance and high yields.

Heirloom varieties are cherished, but the farmers and gardeners who developed them never intended their varieties to stand still in time. Organic Seed Alliance continues the long tradition of on-farm seed stewardship by working with farmers to breed new varieties and improve old ones. The result? Varieties, such as Abundant Bloomsdale Spinach, that excel in organic systems and have enough genetic diversity to be widely adapted. These, in turn, become the heirlooms of tomorrow!

An improved savoyed spinach that boasts cold tolerance and high yields. Best as an early spring crop or for fall harvests. Abundant Bloomsdale produces large, super-savoyed, substantial leaves. Grow as a mature spinach plant. Named after the Abundant Life Seed Foundation Farm, where this variety started in 2002.

This product, though Certified Organic in the United States, is not certified to Canadian Organic standards.

Growing instructions
Direct sow any time soil can be worked in the cooler months, from about 6 weeks before first fall frost until the date of your last spring frost. Broadcast seeds in a well cultivated garden patch, or seed in rows 10" apart, and thin seedlings to 6". Spinach sown in fall will come up extremely early in the spring. When full size, harvest the entire plant promptly, especially in late spring, when it tends to bolt under heat pressure. Sow in successions for a steady crop. For a good fall crop, sow spinach in August. Fall crops yield until deep winter; with a cold frame, you can eat spinach all winter long.

Absolutely magnificent. I had eight plants that weren’t nearly harvest-ready by the end of the growing season, so I mulched them and left them under row cover over the winter. Despite ~60” of snowfall in the Catskills and being directly under the snowpack sliding off my roof, these babies were incredible come spring harvest. Even with bolting due to warming temps, easily the sweetest, most flavorful spinach I’ve ever had, plus you can eat the stalks! Highly recommended for colder climates.

This isn't a complaint about the seed quality, rather that even though this variety is touted as being more resistant to bolting, all my plants are already going to seed in the third week of April. There are only several leaves on each one, most of which have the serrated edges indicative of decline. I imagine the temperature fluctuations are to blame , but I officially give up on spinach. I've never had success keeping them from bolting, so I'll stick to the dependable greens from now on, of which there are blessedly many.

Planted these seeds as soon as they arrived and none of them sprouted. Three weeks later and still no luck

Thank you so much for your purchase! We are so sorry that you didn't have the best germination rate with our Abundant Bloomsdale Spinach pack. Spinach seeds need cooler weather to germinate and sprout. We will be reaching out to you privately to remedy your growth issue. Thank you!

It was my first time growing this type of spinach, and it was easy! I planted the seeds in a raised, cedar bed. I've been harvesting it every day and even adding it to smoothies.
